Canada, July 24th, 2018 -- George Yancy's important book Backlash now in audio, narrated by the author, with a foreword written and narrated by philosopher and political activist Dr. Cornel West: for all readers with the courage and care to act for racial and social justice. (Library Journal)

“Direct and honest, Yancy’s delineations of white violence, white indifference, and white naïveté are both thoughtful and discomforting.” (Publishers Weekly)

“George Yancy’s courageous appeal to White America ‘to confront the problem of whiteness; to cultivate a critical awareness of the specter of whiteness and white privilege that each one of you inherits’ elicited a remarkable range of responses, some hideous beyond words, some welcoming what he rightly called a ‘gift.’ This eloquent meditation on the events and their meaning calls on us, with piercing honesty, to think hard, and work hard, to excise the malignancy of white supremacy from our culture and our lives.” (Noam Chomsky)

Do white Americans benefit from racism?

When George Yancy wrote his controversial New York Times op-ed entitled “Dear White America” he asked white Americans to confront the ways that they benefit from racism. He was unprepared for the anger it would cause.

In Backlash, Yancy expands upon the original article, documents the controversy it created, and seeks to understand what it was about the op-ed that created so much rage among so many white readers. He challenges white Americans to rise above the hatred and to develop a new empathy for the African American experience.

George Yancy is Professor of Philosophy at Emory University. He is the author, editor and co-editor of over 18 books. He is known for his influential essays and interviews in the New York Times' philosophy column, The Stone. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research study shows that painkillers don't work as well when on sleep deprived subjects.

Canada, July 21st, 2018 -- A new study has come out to say that your painkillers may not work as well if you are sleep deprived and that taking a Natural Sleep Aid can help with pain management. The study was completed at the Boston Children's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), both in Boston, MA, and their findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine. Co-led by brain physiologist Alban Latremoliere, Ph.D. and sleep physiologist Chloe Alexandre, Ph.D., the team of researchers found surprising connections between pain sensitivity and sleep deprivation. This is concerning as millions of Americans suffer from chronic and severe pain daily, which can be the cause of their sleep deprivation.

The study specifically investigated the impact of acute and chronic sleep deprivation on the sensitivity to painful and non-painful stimuli. The studies were preformed on mice. The findings of the study were stated simply: "The consequences of chronic insufficient sleep for health remain uncertain.  Sleep quality and duration predict presence of pain the next day in healthy subjects suggesting that sleep disturbances alone may worsen pain, and experimental sleep deprivation in humans supports this claim."

Some of the more interesting facts about the study come in the way the mice were actually sleep deprived. Researchers 'entertained' the mice, keeping them awake. This mimicked the way most humans become sleep deprived.     Team lead  Chloe Alexandre, Ph.D. said, "We found that 5 consecutive days of moderate sleep deprivation can significantly exacerbate pain sensitivity over time in otherwise healthy mice. The response was specific to pain, and was not due to a state of general hyperexcitability to any stimuli." Therefore the study showed moderate sleep deprivation is as bad as severe or chronic sleep deprivation.

As for pain that is created by sleeplessness, like a groggy headache, pain killers had little or no effect on elevating this pain. As sleeplessness most times accompanies chronic pain, this is a real problem for those who get caught up in the sleep/pain cycle. The findings suggest that patients with chronic pain who use common painkillers may have to increase their dose if they are also sleep deprived or they can add a sleep aid like Nutriden Advanced Sleep Aid Supplement. Nutriden Advanced Sleep Aid supplements the brain’s natural melatonin production and introducing GABA, a neuro-inhibitor transmitter, can promote calming focus. Getting a healthy amount of sleep for the chronic pain suffer can help with their pain management. Nutriden can help with sleep problems and thereby help painkillers work.

Paper Shades, a trailblazer in sustainable fashion, is launching their 2018 collection of eco-friendly sunglasses made of recycled paper that come in multiple styles and sizes.

Hong Kong, July 20th, 2018 -- Paper Shades, a pioneer in sustainable fashion that is re-envisioning sunglasses that can protect you and the planet, today launched their crowdfunding campaign onSparkRaise.

Paper Shades sunglasses are designed to relieve the burden of waste produced by unrecycled plastic sunglasses that end up in landfills or our oceans.A 2017 study estimates that at current rates approximately 12 billion metric tonnes of plastic waste could be in landfills or the natural environment by 2050, which is about 35,000 times the weight of the Empire State Building (Science Advances). Plastic sunglasses contribute to this plastic waste epidemic with most used sunglasses also ending up in landfills or the environment. The stylish sunglasses by Paper Shades are eco-friendly and affordable, with frames made from recycled paper, which can biodegrade in the environment.

“We were tired of having to choose between fast fashion products that don’t last and luxury branded goods that are not affordable for the everyday person,” said James Chu, designer and founder of Paper Shades. “Paper Shades gives the consumer greater variety at more reasonable prices, protecting the environment, and supporting a fast fashion business model.”

The 2018 collection by Paper Shades is durable, lightweight and slim, making it easy to toss into your pocket or bag and carry it around all day. They are great for the beach, parties, festivals, and travel, allowing you to be fashionable with a conscience, without breaking the bank.

Paper Shades’ 2018 collection is available in 6 styles, including in black and light and dark cork, with a rounded or wayfarer shaped rim. They are ultra minimal, with some styles offering black or neon blue lenses, and all lenses offering UV400 protection as standard.

“We chose to launch our 2018 collection on SparkRaise, the crowdfunding platform for the socially conscious.  Their work with purpose-led organizations matches well with our brand and mission,” said James Chu.
