Sep 6th 2018 -- As part of the company launching into the marketplace, Nutriden is re launching its new Bone and Joint HealthSupplements that contains Vitamin C, which has been associated with reducing risk of bone fractures.
Most people know that Vitamin C is an important nutrient, but most are not aware of its value in relation to building and maintaining bone health. Many people first learn about the value of Vitamin C in school where it is introduced through history’s explorers and their poor nutrient- lacking diets that caused many of them to get scurvy. However, scurvy is not really a common occurrence now in developed countries, but developing bone health diseases, including suffering from bone fractures are still a risk.
Building bone density is important in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and bone fractures. Studies have associated the following with Vitamin C intake:- The bone benefits of Vitamin C appear to be particularly striking for women who smoke or are on hormone replacement therapy.
- In animal studies, Vitamin C helped prevent the bone loss associated with ovary removal. In this study, the researchers suggest that Vitamin C could prevent “low turnover osteoporosis” — which is a type of bone loss associated with ovary removal. Bone turnover involves the on-going process by which old bone is broken and new bone formed. Low bone turnover, means low bone renewal.
- Higher intake of Vitamin C has been associated with a lower rate of bone loss as we age. Equally, many studies report that individuals with osteoporosis have lower levels of Vitamin C.
- Higher intake of Vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of bone fractures, while low levels of ascorbic acid have been reported in patients experiencing hip fracture. For example, in the 15-year Framingham Osteoporosis Study, participants with the highest intake of total Vitamin C had significantly fewer fractures compared to those with the lowest Vitamin C intake.
- Vitamin C aids in fracture healing. In both human and animal studies, adequate Vitamin C levelsare consistently found to speed fracture healing.
