Los Angeles, CA — / PRBlast / — To mark the beginning of Pride Month, Councilmember Nithya Raman celebrated the completion of the Odin Street underpass mural restoration in Hollywood, titled the “Blue Moon Trilogy.” With funding from AIDS Project Los Angeles, artist Russell Carlton originally began the mural in 1987 to serve as a message of hope at the height of the AIDS crisis, which Carlton lost his life to the following year. After falling into disrepair since its last restoration in 1993, the mural was restored and completed through the collaborative efforts of community members, City departments, and restoration experts.

“In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic — after two years of unprecedented loss and hardship — the message that Russell Carlton shared in this mural is as timely and meaningful in this moment as ever,” said Councilmember Raman. “I’m so grateful to the Department of Cultural Affairs, Fine Art Conservation Laboratories, and the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council for leading the charge in reviving Russell’s message of self-empowerment, health, love and hope that can be shared by all Angelenos in a time when it is truly needed.”

In 2017, Russell Carlton’s parents signed an artist’s rights agreement in 2017 to support the restoration efforts. The Department of Cultural Affairs, Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council (HHWNC), Fine Art Conservation Laboratories, the former District 4 Office, Caltrans, and the Hollywood Bowl worked together to move forward with a partial restoration of the top two thirds of the mural as “Phase I,” while still in need of funding to restore the bottom third.

“The restoration of this historical memorial public art mural was a wonderful project that blesses the community with positive energy, color and an educational benefit,” said Scott M. Haskins of Fine Art Conservation Laboratories. “We were honored to be chosen to apply our skills and professional efforts for the restoration of this mural with such a dynamic social purpose and conscience.”

This year, Yami Duarte of the Department of Cultural Affairs helped to spearhead the completion of the mural, bringing back the Fine Art Conservation Lab, led by Scott Haskins, to carry out the restoration. With continued support from Caltrans, the Hollywood Bowl, and Council District 4, Russell Carlton’s mural was brought back to life in May of 2022.

“We were delighted to keep artist Russell Carlton's vibrant mural from being painted over and lost to LA's LGBTQ history. Conservator Scott Haskins has restored the mural so that it looks great after decades of being largely invisible,” said Orrin Feldman and Patty Dryden, former Vice President & former Board Member of Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council, respectively. “Even in the face of what was then a deadly HIV/AID diagnosis in the 1980s, Russell's artwork still reminds us to remember that there is hope and beauty as we try to live through today's COVID pandemic. It's a lesson well-worth remembering.”

The original plaque from the mural’s original installation remains at the site. Its introduction reads:

National Historic Landmark is site of ‘Taste of History’ Juneteenth Celebration.

Austin, Texas — / PRBlast / — When young Martin McDonald and his parents traveled as slaves from Tennessee to Texas in the 1840s, his family could not imagine a future where they would be free. Years later, on June 19, 1865, the future of McDonald and Bastrop County were changed when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the Civil War was over and slaves were freed. On Saturday, June 18, the property owned by McDonald’s family will be the centerpiece of the 2022 Bastrop County Juneteenth celebration.

The Juneteenth, ‘Taste of History’ event will be free to the public and will take place from 12p.m.-4p.m. at the historic Hopewell Rosenwald School located in Bastrop County at 690 Hwy 21 West in Cedar Creek. The celebration will feature foods that are historic to the African American community, whether dishes served to those who were enslaved, or cuisine that may originated in other places but modified based on available ingredients, the history of the dishes will be provided in keeping with the educational theme.

Juneteenth, derived from the word June and the date 19th, is the oldest nationally celebrated recognition of the ending of slavery. The announcement in Texas came two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in Union states.

The Hopewell Community Club will host the open house, led by Elroy Williams who was married to Sophia McDonald, a direct descendent of Martin McDonald. The club has worked for nearly a decade to restore the school, and this is its first major public event since receiving an historic designation on July 15, 2015. There will be games, an antique sale, refreshments and, most importantly, conversations with former students and family members of those who attended the school.

The Hopewell Rosenwald School – Cedar Creek was constructed in 1921-1922 with funds from the Rosenwald Rural School Building Program, established in 1917 for the educational advancement of African American children in the South. The program’s CEO Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck and Co. of Chicago, partnered with Booker T. Washington to help realize the school’s mission of offering education to children of color. The school represents an important time in Texas’ history when legally mandated separate – but rarely equal – accommodations for African American students were the norm throughout the southern United States

The Hopewell Community Club is under the fiscal umbrella of American YouthWorks, whose mission is to provide young people with opportunities to build careers and improve communities through education, training, and service to others.

The Juneteenth event is sponsored by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, Resilient Bastrop County Initiative, Central Texas Network Weavers and Bastrop County Cares. The Hopewell Rosenwald School restoration project was primarily funded by the Department of Interior’s National Parks Service.
