Palm Beach Neurological Center is located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and has been actively involved in clinical trials and research for decades. The staff of the Center are heavily dedicated to furthering research in the neurological field. Dr. Michael Tuchman, M.D., has over 30 years of research experience. Rhonda Skiles, ARNP, has well over 14 years of experience conducting research at the Center.

During 2014, the Center has focused primarily on research in Alzheimer’s Disease and Migraine.

Migraine Research

In August, the Center announced that it is participating in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase II study on migraine prevention. The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of AMG in chronic migraine prevention and will cover 12 weeks. Qualified participants may receive either one of two doses of the medication or a placebo in a subcutaneous injection. After the 12 weeks, participants will have the option to receive the actual investigative medication at a specified dose.

To qualify for this study, participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have headaches at least 15 days out of a month, with 8 or more of those days being migraine days, for 3 months prior to the study
  • Meet other study eligibility criteria
Alzheimer’s Research The Center is also participating in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, fixed dose study of Lu AE58054 in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease controlled by Donepezil. The study is scheduled to last 28 weeks and the qualified participants will swallow a pill of the investigative medication or a placebo once each day. Qualified participants must:
  • Have been receiving a drug containing Donepezil for the last 6 months, at a dose of 10-mg per day for the last 4 months.
  • Be diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • Be age 50 or older
  • Have a caregiver available during every visit
  • Not have any other conditions affecting mental ability. e.g. schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease
  • Have complete list of medication history. Certain drugs may disqualify the participant.

  • Furthering research. Clinical trials move research further along and provide for newer, safer, and more effective treatments.
  • Receiving quality care. The Center provides excellent care to our study participants.
  • Free care and expense compensation. All study-related medications and consultations will be free, and often the study sponsors will reimburse for reasonable travel, food, or parking expenses.
  • Receiving cutting edge treatment. Study participants may receive cutting edge treatments that improve quality of life.

Pool Doctor of the Palm Beaches is announcing that they are offering in-ground pool construction for homes in the West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach areas.

Across the nation, there are more than 4.5 million homes with in-ground swimming pools. Florida contains the second largest number of private pools statewide at just over 650,000.Roughly ten percent of Florida homes have swimming pools. This statistic is expected to increase in number. People may choose to construct an in-ground pool for a variety of reasons which boil down to two:

  • An in-ground swimming pool adds value to the property. A well-constructed, well-designed, and well-maintained pool will add about eight percent to the value of the property when the owner goes to sell it.
  • An in-ground pool adds quality of life to the home. Many households prefer to have a private swimming pool in the backyard for family and social gatherings or just general summer fun. Not only is a pool social-friendly, but a well-designed pool can add aesthetic beauty to the backyard.

Once a homeowner has decided to research constructing a pool on their property, they’ve already decided an in-ground pool will add to their lifestyle. At this point they are trying to determine what materials to use, what shape and depth they want, certain aesthetics, their budget, and who they can trust with such a large project.

Florida is a prime location for residential pool construction. It is a state where the swimming season is year-round and the cost of labor is relatively low (as compared to other states). There are a large number of pool companies and the competition helps to keep the price down. However, pool design and installation is still likely to run into the tens of thousands of dollars and building an in-ground pool is a major construction undertaking and requires specific engineering expertise. The old adage “you get what you pay for” certainly applies.

Homeowners must wade through the pool installation options available. A handy resource is the Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA), a non-profit group that works as a vetting organization for pool companies. This association verifies the company’s reputation, certification, and associated licenses. If the company is a member of the FSPA, then the homeowner can be assured the company has a minimum quality standard.

Choosing a company vetted by the FSPA is the first step towards choosing a reputable pool installation company. Another important factor in determining whether a company is trustworthy is how long the company has been installing pools. Experience is desired for this type of project. Also, the longer the company has been serving the community, the better the data for quality of service. More time means more customers, more customers means more reviews and references, and it is more likely that the Better Business Bureau will have a report and grade for the business.

The Costa Rican real estate market is now flooded with fully furnished American-style homes. Six years ago that was not the case.

Six years ago, Costa Rica had an intense real estate market that did not have many American-style homes already constructed for sale at a reasonable price. There were plenty of Tico-style homes for sale; however, many American expats learned that while the Tico homes were in the price range they wanted, these homes did not really meet their lifestyle preferences.

Tico homes tended to run smaller and did not always include certain amenities Americans expected, such as a dryer hook-up in the laundry room, hot water in the shower or an open floor plan. Expats were left with the choice of building their ideal home in paradise from scratch, or spending an exorbitant amount for one of the few American-style homes available.

Fast forward to today and a search of real estate listings shows a new trend. There are American-style homes for sale at reasonable prices and they are being sold fully furnished. Many of these homes served as rental properties and the owners do not wish to deal with the logistics of moving, selling, or getting rid of the furnishings involved.

The advantages to purchasing a fully furnished home for the buyer are:

  • They do not have to outfit the home from scratch. The buyer can walk through the home and pick and choose what furniture and appliances they wish to keep, and what they wish to replace.
  • They do not have to ship down a whole household from the States. Everything that comes into Costa Rica has to go through customs and gets assessed a duty tax (even used items). The buyer of a fully furnished home could choose to only ship a few key items, saving a great deal on shipping costs and duty fees.
  • They have time to ship and/or replace items. The buyer of a fully furnished home could prioritize the items they want to replace and plan strategically how they will do so. They can choose whether or not it is an item that they need to import from the U.S. or whether it can be purchased in country. There is more flexibility because the home is usable as is.
  • They may move - in or rent the home immediately. If the home is a primary residence, the home buyer could choose to move-in immediately and slowly renovate as they wish. If the home is intended as a rental, the buyer can almost immediately turn around and rent it out.

It appears that this trend of selling fully furnished homes has become a major selling point in Costa Rica’s buyer’s market as property owners and real estate agents try to get the sale. Nearly half of the constructed homes for sale are listed with the option of purchasing it fully furnished.
