News by "COVID-19"

SYDNEY, Australia – November 20, 2020 - In an official statement released by the Workplace Mental Health Institute (WHMI) on November 20, Mr. Peter Diaz, the CEO of the WHMI, is urging governments and local authorities to stop the lockdowns for mental health's sake, while wholeheartedly encouraging people across the globe to reach out for qualified help. This position statement is part of the WMHI's ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the devastating impacts of government-imposed lockdowns and other restrictions on citizens' mental health and well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Lockdowns (around the world) have led to an increase in rates of depression of up to 300%"

As the world's premier mental health solution, the WMHI has spearheaded an anti-lockdown campaign to pro-actively address the root cause of the staggering, historic rise in Covid-19-linked depression of up to 300%, as well as stress, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, especially among younger individuals and women. Whilst the short lockdowns made sense at the beginning of the pandemic, when scientists and medical doctors knew very little of the novel coronavirus, the fact that lockdowns continue to be imposed around the world is perversely nonsensical from a mental health perspective.

" A disaster of epic proportions, leading to a tsunami of mental health outbreaks"

As the ongoing, extensive use of Covid-19 lockdown policies have already pushed mankind on the verge of a global mental health crisis, Mr. Peter Diaz expresses deep concern over the snowball effect of these draconian measures on people's mental health and well-being. "Lockdowns are the cause of a lot of pain and suffering in the form of depression, loneliness, anxiety, substance abuse, domestic violence, self-harm, and even suicide", laments Mr. Diaz. Many people around the world with no pre-pandemic mental health problems have experienced severe mental distress since the lockdowns, resulting in an unprecedented surge in individuals seeking mental health help. But even developed nations are ill-prepared for this ongoing disaster.

"As mental health experts, the WMHI warns that lockdowns are both unsustainable and irresponsible"

The anti-democratic, repeated lockdowns, shutdown orders targeting certain types of businesses, curfew, social distancing, isolation, quarantine, and other prevailing restrictive measures have led to the curtailing of civil liberties and implicitly, the perceptible abuse of basic human rights, as per the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Failing to properly respect these rights is detrimental to an individual's mental health and well-being. The link between socioeconomic status and mental health outcomes cannot be overlooked, as social interaction, livelihood, and quality of life are absolutely vital to good mental health.

"A clear case of the Cure being worse than the Illness"

Whilst the global economy is sinking into a recession, many people across the globe have to cope with the indirect, potentially long-term Covid-19 harms in these topsy-turvy times. Mr. Diaz emphasizes that "the destruction of livelihoods and the loss of employment of millions" are amongst the non-Covid-19 harms that have taken a toll on people's mental health, urging authorities across the globe to recognize their duty to do no indirect harm.

Speaking on behalf of the WMHI, the leading mental health solution, Mr. Diaz further warns that the mental health effects of non-Covid-19 harms clearly outweigh the potential benefits of additional, repeated lockdowns. Moreover, in keeping with the WMHI's core values - excellence, honesty, compassion, integrity, and transparency - Mr. Diaz highlights the need for mental health organizations to effectively address the root cause of the problem, stating that "it is unacceptable for organizations to receive funding in exchange for keeping silent on this issue".

"It's OK to be angry at injustice - Speak up!"

Stressing that feelings of anger, sadness, frustration, despair, and hopelessness are completely normal from a mental health perspective, given this whole abnormal, "insane situation", and people "have every right to be angry", Mr. Diaz encourages people to direct their anger "to the right place - not to themselves, their family, partners, or friends". The CEO of the WMHI also advises people to speak up and regularly contact their local representatives to let them know how they are feeling and encourages individuals to be kind to themselves and each other, spread the WMHI's message around, and reach out for help and support from qualified mental health professionals - " Wherever you are, you are not alone - the mental health experts at the WMHI are here for you".

New York City, NY - Nov.25, 2020 – GBRI, an online sustainability education platform has announced FREE resources including an article and course on HVAC strategies to limit the transmission of airborne diseases like COVID-19. The original webinar approved by American institute of Architects (AIA) and GBCI for 1 Continuing Education Unit aired live earlier this month and was registered by around 2000 professionals from around the world. Following the live webinar, GBRI has made the replay available for the public including the research resources and PowerPoint slides.

“The research doesn’t stop here and you can use this to educate your employees and clients about what we know now and what we don’t know about the COVID-19 virus and the HVAC strategies we shared. Its ok to admit what we don’t know and continue our quest to fight this pandemic as one tribe- one human tribe” says Jeslin Varghese, Director of Sustainability at GBRI.

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems play a crucial role in maintaining an ambient indoor environment considering we spend 90 percent of our time indoors. Poor ventilation in indoor spaces is associated with increased transmission of respiratory infections and there has been several studies after the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003, H1N1 influenza epidemic in 2011 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2012that strengthens the significance of ventilation. Recent studies show that there is clear evidence the COVID-19 virus can stay alive beyond 6 feet in some cases more than 100 feet, can stay in HVAC ducts and units. Considering this growing body of evidence suggesting airborne transmission as a route of infection, coupled with the knowledge of COVID-19 aerosols, it is crucial that we arm our HVAC system, supporting ventilation and filtration mechanisms to protect building occupants. GBRI’s HVAC course educates us on the importance of ventilation, role of HVAC for an ambient indoor environment, shares the research around the pandemic and looks at HVAC specific strategies that will help mitigate the transmission of respiratory infections such as COVID-19.

As many states get ready to re-open businesses and schools, it is imperative that building managers, school superintendents and facility managers are equipped with transmission mitigation strategies while operating their newly opened facilities.

GBRI, formerly Green Building Research Institute is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Itrecently announced several scholarships for young professionals and students preparing for LEED Green Associate, LEED AP, or WELL AP exams or seeking continuing education to maintain their credential. Singapore-based entrepreneur, Amir Nada, launched a financial comparison platform during the lockdown that is helping Singaporeans master all their money moves. The new platform allows consumers to easily compare and choose the best financial products and plan better ways to spend and save.

Singapore (September) --There’s always an opportunity in a crisis.”That’s the resounding message from a Singapore- based digital marketer, Amir Nada, who developed ROSHI-a financial comparison website seven months ago when the country was forced into Covid-19 lock down restrictions.

According to a research conducted by global professional services company, Accenture, Singaporean Fintech companies raised US $735 million in 2019. This was a 69 percent increase compared to the same period in 2018.  Realizing the popularity and demand forFintech services in the country, Amirdeveloped ROSHI using a small amount of his own capital and by applying an experience optimisation framework (something he has developedto perfection in his corporate job)to analyse all market players in-depth, collect learnings and develop a competitive product.

“Being stuck at home has given me the opportunity to focus on something I have always been passionate about,so I used the time to create ROSHI,” said Amir when asked to explain his motivation for creating the platform.  He also mentioned that he was continuously frustrated by the poor user experience and biased product listings provided by local market leaders. He added, “I wanted to give Singaporeans greater value by providing them with an easy-to-use interface, smart comparison features and unbiased product listings/ratings.”

ROSHI already offers a plethora of financial product categories; however, plans are afoot to introduce additional money tools and exciting new features in the coming months. The founderalso has plans to expand the service beyond the borders of Singapore. To accomplish this goal, the young entrepreneur says he is open to discussing seed funding opportunities with investors.

For further information about ROSHI or to engage the financial comparison services offered on the platform, visit: https://www.roshi.sg.

Chicago, IL -- August 28th, 2020 -- From anxiety, depression and worry, to pandemic pounds, to the work-from-home productivity balancing act, COVID-19 has been tough on the American workforce. With millions of Americans from coast to coast dealing with the negative impacts of the pandemic, employers hoping to retain valued employees need to provide a plan and training for their teams to be able to better handle the wellness challenges they are facing.

Chicago-based corporate and personal growth trainer, Roderick Mason,a corporate training consultant, is uniquely qualified to provide advice to corporate clients and employees. Mason’s training courses, which run from only an hour long to week-long events, balance training that offers a real return on investment for corporate clients, businesses and the C-suite while still being of personal interest and benefit to employees.

“One thing that employers can provide to help employees to reset their negative emotions or their less than healthy coping mechanism, is to keep up with some of the traditions of the office workplace such as the monthly lunch and learn,” explains Mason. “Many of my clients have seen real value in bringing the whole team together over Zoom and engaging my services to deliver a lunchtime wellness seminar. There is profound value is having everyone stop working, focus on the same thing, and applying those newly learned skills to their workday.”

Mason is extensively trained and qualified to deliver the dozens of courses he offers. Through his workshops, keynote addresses, in-person and online sessions, Mason offers diversity and inclusion training, health coaching, empowerment speaking, and DiSC assessment workshops, which provide a non-judgmental tool used to discuss people's behavioral differences. Mason’s training in executive coaching and leadership consulting is also available for business executives and C-suite teams.

“I’ve had many clients contact me to discuss their team’s performance,” explains Mason. “Prior to the pandemic, everyone got along well, there were few interpersonal challenges, the team was productive and were cranking out high-level work product. Now that the employees are working from home, employers are sometimes seeing a lack of communication and cohesion. Much of that can be chalked up to the stress of working in a more challenging environment and having non-direct communication taking over as the primary means of contact. It’s easy to read someone’s body language when they are right in front of you in the office, it’s a lot more difficult to guess the tone and sentiment someone is conveying via email or text message and that’s where some of the friction comes up. The virtual workshops I offer go a long way to helping to sort out those challenges and to bring the team back to the productivity and harmony they once had.”

With more than 25 years of sales and management experience including team building, business transformation, project management and crisis management, Mason has helped numerous teams weather difficult times through his holistic approach to corporate leadership and team training and has guided leaders to navigate through the tough times and help their teams to reach new heights.

Ilorin, Kwara, April, 2020 -- For a year that promised to be better than previous years, 2020 is turning to be a year built on false hopes, beliefs and promises. In a twinkle of an eye the country and even the world at large is running at a loss due to the invasion of the coronavirus (Covid-19). Not only has the virus killed so many people, it has also led to a compulsory lockdown of countries in order to suppress its spread; Nigeria being one of the affected countries.

While the virus doesn’t respect anyone irrespective of age, race or colour, the WHO and the NCDC have released several audio and video messages in order to teach people how to maintain social distancing and how to keep themselves safe in a situation where social distancing is unavoidable.

While these messages have proved to curb the spread, it’s no doubt that people in rural areas with little or no access to modern media and direct sources of information stand the risk of being exposed to the virus.

To fix the gap, Global Afrique Welfare Foundation; a foundation sworn to provide relief to the underprivileged members of the society, reached out to rural areas to sensitize members on COVID-19, its risk factors and preventive measures.

Amongst others, the foundation laid emphasis on social distancing, frequent washing of hands, frequent use of hand sanitizers, and use of face masks. The representatives also encouraged members to cough into their elbows rather than their hands.

Following the words of AbhijitNaskar, ‘The world is going through a period of crisis, but whether we look at it as a crisis or as an opportunity to reshape our thinking depends on us. So use this period as a lesson on how to live life with a concern for all of humankind,’we have decided to contribute to the survival and sustenance of people who know less and have less all through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the spread of the virus in Nigeria, the foundation has been able to reach out to over 150 households in 12 different communities. Some of the communities include; Bada, Abelu, Agara, Apa-Ola, and Kawu. At the end of the outreach, the foundation shared relief materials like liquid soaps, Dettol solid soaps and hand sanitizers

GlobalAfrique Welfare Foundation believes that everyone should be involved in the fight against the deadly virus and to this end; the foundation has begun to work on reaching out to every rural community in Kwara State. The foundation aims to reach out to 60 rural communities during the pandemic.

In subsequent outreaches, the foundation aims to provide edibles for people finding it difficult to feed their families during this hard time.

Alhaji Mahmud Abdul Akeem, the chairman of the foundation said and quoted as ‘Neighbourhoods are wailing in fear and desperation. If now we don’t lend a hand, what’s the point of us!’
