Bettas are strikingly beautiful, intelligent, and fantastic fish with unique personalities.Individuals who share their homes with them believe that interactions with their scaled family members help them deal with stress, tension, anxiety, and depression too. Unfortunately, many bettas never experience life outside of their small plastic tanks in the pet store. Oftentimes, these bettas don’t have ample space to move and are forced to live in unsanitary water with large amounts of ammonia and nitrates. As a result, many bettas develop bacterial infections, fin rot, swim bladder disease, dropsy, and other ailments, and sometimesthey die. Betta Fish Rescue is working hard to rescue and change the lives of betta fish in need by providing them with bigger tanks in which to live and thrive, medication, live plants and Indian almond leaves, and clean dechlorinated water so they can heal.
According to Kristi Patrice Carter, JD (founder and executive director), "I started our organization because I wanted to do something for these amazing pets who were living in very horrible conditions and were wasting away." Carter stated, “I love these fish and couldn't just stand by and do nothing. So I organized some friends, who are also fish lovers, and we started this rescue organization in an effort to match bettas with caring family members and teach them how to care for a betta fish. We are enthusiastic about making a positive difference in the lives of these amazing creatures and it is our mission to save as many fish as we can. We also plan to eradicate fish homelessness and careless dying due to improper care by educating people in how to take care of betta fish.”
According to Carter, Betta Fish Rescue focuses on rescuing homeless fish and those often passed up due to their damaged fins or swim bladder conditions and those that are otherwise too sick to be adopted. The organizationchooses those bettas that others pass up in stores to give them a fighting chance at life. The foster parents at Betta Fish Rescue nurse these bettas back to health so they can be adoptedby families who want to give them a BETTA life.
The price of these adoptions is $30, which includes the fish, dechlorinator and premium food. For an additional fee, they also provide a 3.5 gallon tank, décor, live or silk plants, and more. Betta Fish Rescue ships fish to their adoptive families; however, they prefer to hand-deliver the fish via car transport if the adoptive family lives within two to three hours from their main office in Chicago, IL. If shipping is agreed upon, the adoptive parent covers the cost of the fish and any overnight shipping costs.
Betta Fish Rescue is very similar to traditional animal shelters but they're focused solely on betta fish. To date, they've rescued and rehabilitated fifteen bettas and have a goal to save 85 more by the end of the year. They currently spend 25% on marketing and administrative costs and 85% on operating expenses (3.5 gallon or higher tanks, fish food, fish medications, dechlorinator water treatments, tank decor, silk, and live plants, etc.) This rescue organization is very transparent about their expenses and the way they run their organization.
