What effect do sudden power outages have on your HVAC units?

Todays’ homes rely heavily of power and when it goes out, life stops. Most homes use 120 volt electric services which can range from -169 volts to +169 volts and all of the appliances we currently use fall within those ranges. However, when a storm hits, power can surge and voltages can rise above +170 volts. This will cause damage to appliances including the HVAC system.

Advancements in technology are putting more electronics into appliances such as refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers and even whole home heating and cooling units. Smart thermostats are allowing residents to control their homes from their smart phones, which is an awesome convenience and helps to save money. Unfortunately, when the power goes out, there is more of a chance for damage to the electronics in them.

Power surges are one of the biggest culprits that cause damage to our appliances and home operating systems such as a/c units, heating systems, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. Internal power surges happen throughout the day as the high energy demand services are cycled on and off, most are still within the normal voltage ranges and cause no damage. External power surges create more damage than internal ones. These surges occur when power was unexpectedly turned off and then is restored. External power surges are caused during storms, accidents, or other emergency circumstances.

Rainbow Lakes Heating & AC has created best practices for its clients to follow when experiencing a power outage. Always turn your thermostat off when experiencing a power outage. When it safe and before you turn your AC unit back on, check the HVAC unit outside for debris or damage. Reset the circuit breaker inside you’re a/c unit by flipping the breaker at the electric panel on and off. Wait 30 minutes. Turn the thermostat back on. Adhering to these will give the home owner the best chances for the least amount of damage to their air conditioning units.
